NCTS 2005 Summer Program--

Student Seminar on Lie Algebra

Last updated: June 13, 2005

Organizer:

M. K. Chuah (National Chiao Tung University)

Time:

Every Friday afternoon of July 1 - August 26, 2005.
Starts at Friday 1pm, and ends at 3 or 4pm.
First organizational meeting at 1pm, July 1, 2005.

Location:

Lecture Room B of NCTS, 4th Floor, 3rd General Building,
National Tsing Hua University.

Goal:

Lie algebras appear in most areas of pure mathematics, and many  researchers seem to want to know something about it. This is a very elementary introduction to the structure theory of complex and real semisimple Lie algebras, followed by exploration of some combinatorial-related research topics. The approach is informal (example-oriented and proof-free), and students are encouraged to give presentations.

Prerequisite:

Undergraduate linear algebra and abstract algebra.

Contents:

1.Complex Semisimple Lie Algebra
Cartan subalgebra, root system, Weyl group, Dynkin diagram.
2.Real Semisimple Lie Algebra
Real form, Killing form, Cartan involution, Vogan diagram.
3.Combinatorial Research Topics
Selected graph theoretic problems in Dynkin and Vogan diagrams.
