(i) A lecture series on "Geometry of special surfaces", will meet  3
       hours per week for six weeks, and the first three weeks will be
       taught by C.L. Terng and the second three weeks by H. Karcher. We
       plan to study the geometry and differential equations of surfaces
       in R^3 with special geometric properties, in particular K=-1
       surfaces, isothermic surfaces, and minimal surfaces.
  
   (ii) A lecture series on "Dynamical systems, Lattice models, and non-linear
        waves", will meet 3 hours per week for six weeks, and the first three
        weeks will be taught by R. Palais and the second three weeks by M. Guest
  
   (iii) A computer lab, that meets 3 hours per week for six weeks, will
         be run by R. Palais. We would like to require each student to carry
         out a computer oriented project related to the mini courses. These
         could be either individual projects or small group projects. To carry
         out these projects and exercises, the students will need familiarity
         with some suitable mathematical software. If they already know
         Mathematica or Maple or Matlab, then they can use that, but we will
         also need to give some lectures in the use of Matlab and 3D-Filmstrip
         to help those students who have no previous experience with any such
         software to get going. We hope all the finished projects could go
         to the NCTS web site.

    The prerequisites of this workshop are linear algebra, ordinary
    differential equations, advanced calculus, and complex analysis.
